Oz: the Great and Powerful Movie Review

Oz: the Great and Powerful seems to be the new “big thing” in Hollywood. A prequel to the original Wizard of Oz made by MGM in 1939, Oz: The Great and Powerful follows a womanizing, conniving young magician traveling with a circus.

One day, after one of his shows, Oscar Diggs is chased into a hot air balloon by an angry mob of his fellow circus performers. After the balloon is cut loose by his faithful assistant, Diggs finds himself soaring over the circus, straight into a brewing storm. As a tornado forms, he’s whisked into the twister, pleading to God for his life.

The magician soon finds himself in a magical land filled with colors, fairies, a bellhop flying monkey, and witches- both good and bad. The good witch, Theodora, finds Diggs and is beguiled by his trickery and magic, hoping that he is the promised wizard that will fulfill a prophesy and save the land. Twists and turns are at every corner of this adventure tale.

Oz: the Great and Powerful boasts of fantastic colors, awesome acting and wonderful graphics. It’s intense, humorous and entertaining. However, this movie is not appropriate for children. Other than the obvious “There’s no such thing as a good witch” argument, this movie contains immodesty, some violence and an overall darkness. This movie is rated PG for sequences of action and scary images, and brief mild language.

I wasn't really a fan of this movie. I can appreciate the mesmerizing CG and colors-the costumes were I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E!- but the overall darkness was too much for me.
