Little Kids and Apologies

I don’t figure out stuff very quickly. At least I don’t that often. However, I have figured out something today!

At my Co-op (a place where homeschool students and parents get together and take/teach classes on different subjects once a week… Our Co-op meets on Mondays) my sister and I watch two little boys before and after co-op while their mom sets up and tears down her keyboard and sound system. They’re the cutest things! I love watching them. Today, when the little boys came up from their class, I started entertaining the eldest of the two. He was giggling and smiling and playing like a monkey. (It made me smile ear to ear. I love that little guy!) Well, he started getting a bit tired and clingy, but he was being just as silly as before. His mom told me that he’s in the habit of saying the word “butt” which, as in most homes, is a “no-no” word in their house. The little boy looked at the other girl that was watching them with me and said, “you’re a butt.” In between our fits of giggles, we told him to apologize. He wouldn’t say a word. To anyone. Finally a motorcycle passed by the building outside and he looked at me with wide eyes and asked “Was that a motorcycle?” “Yes, that was motorcycle,” I replied, “Now apologize.” He immediately grabbed me and put his head against my chest, not saying a word. He never did apologize, but, Oh, he melted my heart. (He’s only two, but he sure does now how to get the attention away from something bad he’s done.)

Even though I’m a sucker for a cute face, (and a snuggly 2 year old) God isn’t. When we do something wrong (like not apologize for something we’ve done wrong) He doesn’t just say “Awwww… you’re so cute, I’ll just let it go this time.” No, He wants us to what he says, even when it’s hard.

This is a really simple example, BUT I like it. J It’s something we need to live by.
